Membership: What's in it for Me!

Membership & What's in it for Me!

New members are very welcome and subscription details are available from: jhbss.info@gmail.com

You may be wondering whether it would benefit you to become a member of the Johannesburg Succulent Society! You may not even live in the Johannesburg area, and of course the question arises, "What's in it for me?"

WhatsApp Group

Members are part of our WhatsApp group. This group is for posting photos of succulent plants blooming in our gardens or found while on holiday. It is a platform for requesting help with identification of succulents, sharing cultivation tips and distributing seeds. Alerts of news articles about succulent related issues, videos and meetings are communicated. To be part of this group, it is not necessary to live in Johannesburg. We have international members over and above the recipients of the newsletter!

The Group is in line with the policies of the JSS, in terms of protecting viable species and colonies in their natural habitats. No specific location information about plants in nature may be divulged.

Part of the crowd

Our network of members freely share excess seeds, plants, as well as suggestions, information and knowledge.

Year End Functions

This event is for members only. It is a time when we meet on a Saturday (or Sunday), socialize, enjoy some food and drink and admire the garden of one of our members. (Thank you so much, Ian, for hosting us again in December of last year! It really was a lovely day.)

"Succulent Saturdays"

Our monthly meetings are open to all. These meetings are held once a month, on Saturday afternoons from 2pm in person and entry fees are reduced for members. When it is not possible to hold an in-person meeting, JSS will endeavour to provide a Zoom / Facebook Live presentation.  (These are recorded and uploaded to our YouTube channel.)

Keep an eye out for the monthly Newsletter to arrive in your Inbox with more details as to the schedule of Club Nights.

Tables come at a discount for non-commercial members. The terms and conditions are that this applies only to members who are not selling on behalf of a professional nursery or similar business venture.  Succulent Shows are open for entries by members. There are comprehensive Group and Plant Classes, in which to enter, and are communicated on the Members only Whatsapp group prior to the event.

Participation in outings

A unique benefit, is the opportunity to participate in outings, plant rescues, and ad hoc similar events. We have had outings to places like the Vredefort Dome, Aloe peglerae colonies in the Magaliesberg and Verlorenvallei, CREW field trips, and visits to Special Succulent collections. Often, the host restricts the number of attendees. Members are invariably the first to be invited. Optimising transport arrangements is easier among those who know each other.
